What is a TFN?

A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique personal number that identifies you within tax and super systems. This number is permanent unique to you only.

Why do I need a TFN?

Having a TFN is not mandatory. However, without a TFN, you will end up paying more tax. You will also be unable to lodge your tax returns electronically or apply for government benefits. If you plan to live in Australia, it is within your best interests to apply for and acquire a TFN as soon as you can.
